Building Technology I

Project 1

The first project required students, in a group of 6 to visit and analyse the installation and configuration of building services in a public building. Amongst the areas focused were active fire protection, passive fire protection, mechanical ventilation, mechanical transportation and air-conditioning systems. Students then produced a detailed report that justifies the type of systems chosen, how they were installed, the benefits and maintenance procedures of each system, within the context of the building's purpose and its design language.

The second project was an individual project which was integrated with the final design for Studio 4. Students were required to propose and plan the services for the final design project, which is an alternative education-based school. In this project, a small part of the proposed school was selected, and proposals for electrical systems, water supply, drainage and sewerage systems were then laid out. The final product is a brief report on the installations and equipments installed together with a detailed drawings of the systems printed out on A1.

Reflections

The module and projects have given me the opportunity to observe and appreciate small details in the implementation of building services, which is something we usually take for granted.

I have gained immense knowledge on the mechanism of each category of service while at the same time gained a newfound appreciation towards the importance of
building services in the daily life. This module has also helped me in obtaining a first hand look at the applications of the theories I learned in the classroom.

I would like to thank both Ar. Sateerah and Mr. Azim for carefully designing this module and projects, as well as passionately guiding the students along the way towards the completion of the module.
